Frequently Asked Questions

Ku-band communication refers to the use of radio frequencies in the 12-18 GHz range, primarily used for satellite communications. Ku-band is widely utilized for broadcast services, Internet access, and satellite communications in commercial and military applications.

Ku-band operates at higher frequencies than C-band (4-8 GHz) and lower frequencies than Ka-band (26.5-40 GHz). Ku-band offers a balance between higher data rates (compared to C-band) and better weather resilience (compared to Ka-band), making it suitable for various applications including SATCOM on the move.

Ku-band is commonly used for satellite TV broadcasting, VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminals) systems, satellite internet, and mobile communications on vehicles, ships, and aircraft. It’s also used in remote sensing and emergency response.

Ku-band offers several advantages, including:

    • High data throughput for internet, video, and voice services
    • Relatively small antenna sizes, making it ideal for mobile applications
    • Wide global coverage through GEO (Geostationary) satellites
    • Less congestion compared to lower frequency bands like C-band

One of the main challenges with Ku-band is signal degradation due to rain fade, which is interference caused by rain and other atmospheric conditions. While Ku-band offers good performance, weather can impact signal strength more than in lower frequency bands like C-band.

Yes, Ku-band is widely used in SATCOM on the move (SOTM) applications. Its small antenna size and robust performance make it ideal for mobile platforms such as vehicles, ships, and airplanes that require continuous satellite connectivity while in motion.

Ku-band typically utilizes parabolic dish antennas or flat-panel phased array antennas. Flat-panel antennas, like those found in REQUTECH’s RESA S Ku series, are preferred for SATCOM on the move applications because of their compact design, ease of integration, and electronically steered beam capabilities.

Ku-band is predominantly used for GEO (Geostationary) satellite communications, but it is also employed in LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite networks. However, LEO satellites typically favor Ka-band for higher data rates, while Ku-band remains popular for GEO and some LEO missions.

Ku-band is moderately susceptible to weather-related issues, especially rain fade. However, advanced error correction techniques and higher power transmission can mitigate most of the performance degradation in moderate to heavy rain, making it reliable for most applications.

Sectors that benefit from Ku-band include broadcasting (satellite TV), defense and military (for mobile communication and reconnaissance), maritime and aviation (for vessel and aircraft connectivity), remote sensing, disaster response, and global satellite internet service providers. Its versatility makes it valuable across commercial, government, and emergency sectors.
